Say goodbye to the infamous pink convertible Barbie used to drive, and say hello to her new hoverboard!
That’s right, after years of VW Beetles, dream homes and the “perfect physique”, Barbie is turning into a realistic and modern woman.
The changes began when Barbie got three new body shapes, which are real representations of a human woman. Now, instead of the perfect bug, Barbie will roam the streets in style with her new hoverboard drone.
Mattel showed off Barbie’s hoverboard, that actually hovers, at New York’s annual Toy Fair. The board will cost $60 and will be available this fall.

“This will certainly attract young girls, but also parents who want to buy a toy for their daughters that would interest them in the STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) realm but aren’t sure what type of toy would inspire that,” said Rhianna Lakin, founder of the group Amelia Dronehart, a female drone pilot group.
The drone comes with a joystick and sliding lever to early adjust the flying height. Four propellors are used in order to raise Barbie well above the ground.
“Everyone knows Barbie,” Lakin says. “If your daughter likes Barbie and she likes the drone, then that may encourage her to pursue STEM. And the next drone she flies won’t necessarily be pink.”
Mattel reports that Barbie sales have risen 1% since its latest quarterly earnings report, in comparison to a 12% decline a year ago.
