The future of construction has arrived.
Singapore has currently invested an estimated $100 million into the Singapore Centre for 3D Printing at Nanyang Technological University. With the investment, they hope to test out 3D printing concrete blocks in bulk.
“In the area of housing there are quite big challenges,” Chua Chee Kai, the center’s director, told3DPrint. “There is no assistance of 3D printers and no availability of printable concrete. We have to develop all this from scratch.”
The goal here is to make concrete blocks that can be made anywhere and shipped to building sites. If the plan proves to be a success, it could take a giant load off workers.
Singapore is no stranger to the world of 3D printing. The city-state operates many large centers and organizations that are solely dedicated to its technological development.

According to Profesor Chua Chee Kai, the idea is to build one story at time, move it to the construction site and then stack them like Legos.
Only the major structural components of each building will be 3D printed. For now, The Centre is working with a private company to test the idea. They will formally present it to government agencies later this year.
